If you do what is good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.
If you do good to those who do good to you, why should you be commended? Even sinners do that.
What credit is it to you if you do good only to those who do good to you? Even sinners do that.
If you are kind only to someone who is kind to you, will God be pleased with you for that? Even sinners are kind to people who are kind to them.

Do you only do good things to people that do good things to you? God will not praise you just for doing that! Even bad people do the same thing.

No, you are to love your enemies and do good and lend without hope of return. Your reward will be wonderful and you will be sons of the most high. For he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked!

“Here is a simple rule of thumb for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! If you only love the lovable, do you expect a pat on the back? Run-of-the-mill sinners do that. If you only help those who help you, do you expect a medal? Garden-variety sinners do that. If you only give for what you hope to get out of it, do you think that’s charity? The stingiest of pawnbrokers does that.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do you receive? For even sinners do the same.
And if you do good to those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even · sinners do the same.
